Hean is an active 67-year-old farmer. He is married, with six sons, one daughter, and 15 grandchildren. Three of his sons still live at home and help him on the farm. He and his wife grow rice to sell at the local market.
Eight months ago, Hean developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him blurred vision, cloudiness, and an inability to see well in sunlight. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on his own.
When Hean learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On November 22nd, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and implant an intraocular lens in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Hean shared: “I hope that I can see well enough to work in the rice fields to support my family.”

Hean underwent cataract surgery so that he can see well again.
It was difficult for Hean to stay inside the house due to light sensitivity from his cataract. After his successful eye surgery, he was able to return to his province and family. He rested for a few days and applied eye drops eight times daily to aid in healing. His vision has improved, and he can recognize the faces of his family and venture outside in the sun. His eye will heal quickly but will be sensitive for a short time. Hean’s life will improve because he can return to growing rice on the family farm to support his family and not worry about going blind.
Hean shared: “I am grateful to the staff and all the people who have made my life easier now that I can see better. I am not afraid to walk outside by myself, and I am happier that I can work on my farm and help my wife and sons. Thank you.”
