Kuong is a 76-year-old retired rice farmer. She is a mother to four sons and four daughters, and the grandmother to 13. She and her husband live in Battambang province, but no longer work in the rice fields due to their age. They live with their youngest son who is a rice farmer. At home, Kuong cooks for the family and likes to listen to the monks pray on the radio. Three years ago, Kuong developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her light sensitivity, tearing, and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, thus she is unable to travel on her own. When Kuong learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for six and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 7th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery, and implant a new lens in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Kuong said: "I hope after surgery, I can see again. I can see my grandchildren's faces and take care of myself better."

Deziranta is a 48-year-old farmer. She is a mother of three daughters who are all married and working as farmers. She lost her husband in 2020 to kidney disease. Despite her early love for school, Deziranta had to drop out after completing 7th grade due to lack of school fees. Currently, she practices farming for her livelihood and occasionally works in other people's gardens where she is paid 5,000 Ugandan Shillings. She lives in a two-roomed muddy semi-permanent house in Buhunga Rukungiri District in Southwestern Uganda. Six years ago, Deziranta developed a painful swelling on her back. This swelling causes her sleepless nights as she cannot sleep on her back. She also experiences paralysis of the back and cannot lift or carry loads. Her symptoms limit her from activities she would comfortably do before, which led her to seek medical attention. Deziranta traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On February 28th, surgeons will remove the mass. Now, Deziranta needs help to raise $137 to fund this procedure. Deziranta says “I beg for your mercy for support to make my surgery possible. Without it, I won’t ever get a chance to undergo my surgery due to limited finances."

Emmy is a 36-year-old taxi driver. He is a father of 4 school-aged children. After completing high school, he had difficulty raising funds for college despite the desire to join university. He enrolled in a driving school and was later hired as a taxi driver. His wife is a farmer and their family of 6 lives in a 2 bedroom semi-permanent house. For 6 years, Emmy has had left inguinal hernia. The hernia causes him pain especially when he strains. Fortunately, on January 25th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $230 to fund Emmy's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Emmy says “I have been with this pain for quite a long time, I could have undergone surgery so long ago but I have always been let down by finances, I surely need and am grateful for your support for the success of my surgery.”
