53-year-old Aye lives with her husband, son and two daughters in a refugee camp in Thailand. Her husband is a teacher, and Aye is a homemaker. All of the children go to school. In her free time, Aye loves to plant different types of flowers around her home. One day in the middle of 2018, Aye's friend told her that her neck looked a bit swollen. Aye did not seek medical attention, as she wasn't experiencing any symptoms. Gradually, however, she began developing mood swings, anxiety, and fatigue. Although she was put on medications by the doctor, her symptoms worsened, and she was referred to Mae Sot General Hospital. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with a left thyroid mass and for the next three years, she returned to the hospital for multiple follow-up appointments. During her appointment on September 28th, the doctor told her that she will need surgery to remove her thyroid and cure her worsening condition. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is seeking $1,500 to fund Aye's thyroidectomy, which is scheduled for October 11th, at Mae Sot General Hospital. Aye is looking forward to her surgery, as she feels as if the mass is increasing in size, and is causing her to have fatigue and chest pain. Aye said: “Because of my condition, I feel sad and angry without reason. Afterwards, I feel bad for my family. I believe that after my surgery, I will have normal emotions again, and I will be able to help my family more.”

Chhay is an adorable four-year-old toddler who lives in Phnom Penh City with six members of his extended family, including his parents, two brothers, an aunt and his grandmother. His mother is a homemaker, and his father is a policeman. Chhay is in preschool and enjoys painting, learning the Khmer alphabet, and counting. He is also learning to ride a bicycle, and tries to keep up with his older brother. For the past year, Chhay has been experiencing sore throats and difficulty swallowing. He has frequent throat infections accompanied by high fevers and a loss of appetite. Chhay was recently diagnosed with enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which, if not treated, will cause his symptoms to persist, and possibly intensify over time. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $265 to fund a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for Chhay, which is scheduled to take place on August 3rd at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. Surgeons will remove his tonsils and adenoids, hopefully relieving Chhay of his symptoms, and helping him live much more comfortably. His grandmother said: "We hope after surgery he will stop having throat infections; it will be easy to swallow, and he will finally sleep well at night."

Sophy is a 41-year-old unmarried rice farmer. She lives in Takeo province with her elderly mother and father and two of her sisters. All of her siblings are rice farmers and help to support their parents. In the evenings, she likes to watch Khmer dramas on television. In June, she was in a motorbike accident and fractured her left forearm. She went to the provincial hospital for surgery and metalwork to heal the fracture, but the bone was still not recovered three months later. She had a second operation to change the metalwork several weeks ago but still cannot use her hand. A neighbor suggested she consult with Children's Surgical Center, where she was diagnosed with a Monteggia fracture, a proximal ulna fracture associated with dislocation of the radial head. Monteggia fractures can be challenging to diagnose and may lead to complications without proper management. It is difficult for her to use the hand, and she is in chronic pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Center, can help. Sophy will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $483. This procedure will allow her to use her hand again. Sophy said: "I hope I can use my hand like before and care for my parents."
