Saruni is a 10-year-old girl from Tanzania. She comes from a large culturally polygamous family with over twenty siblings. Her father is a cattle breeder and farmer who does not earn much from the livelihood. Due to this, Saruni was forced to drop out of school two years ago because her school fees could not be paid. She started working when she was very young as a house manager in people's houses. She has grown to be a very responsible girl. In early 2022, while Saruni was preparing tea for the employer, she tripped over while carrying a pot with hot tea, burning her left arm. She was taken to a military hospital for treatment where she received treatment for her wounds that took months for them to heal. Burn scar contractures have now developed, tightening the skin around her burn. Now she finds it difficult to straighten her arm or carry a load that requires two capable hands. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Saruni receive treatment. On March 2nd, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery to treat the damaged skin around her elbow. This will increase the extension of her elbow and will reduce the pain she feels when she tries to use her arm. Her father can’t afford to pay for the treatment and he is asking for help to fund this $639 procedure. Saruni says, “I am happy that I am going to get treatment and my arm will be better.”

Kosal, who is 35 years old, lives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His three sisters, and the majority of his family members, reside in a rural province and earn their living as rice farmers. Around one month ago, Kosal developed a sinus infection. As a result of the infection, he experiences a fever, and swelling of his sinus, as well as pus and drainage from his nostrils. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is helping Kosal access the treatment he needs to relieve the pressure in his sinus and drain the pus from his nose. On May 2nd, Kosal will undergo a preauricular sinus incision at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, which will restore his ability to breathe comfortably. Kosal needs help to raise $297 to cover the cost of his procedure. Kosal shared, "I hope I can feel comfortable again and go back to my job feeling good."

Victoria is a three-year-old girl from Kenya. Victoria is a cheerful, playful girl, who has been raised by her aunties. When she reached walking age, she could not walk. This prompted her family to seek medical attention at a public hospital near their hometown. They were referred to the Provincial General Hospital in Nakuru County, Kenya. Several tests were done, but financial constraints prevented them from returning for the test results. Victoria's medical treatment was further delayed when a relative who was actively supporting and raising her became ill, and all available finances were directed toward their treatment. Recently, Victoria's guardian, who was visiting her grandmother, was advised to seek medical care at BethanyKids. Victoria has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of her condition, Victoria has been experiencing a visibly enlarged head size. Without treatment, Victoria will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $720 to cover the cost of surgery for Victoria that will treat her hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on March 8th and will drain the excess fluid from Victoria's brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve her quality of life. With proper treatment, Victoria will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young girl. Victoria’s aunty says, “This kid is active but unable to support herself because of the condition. She needs this treatment to be able to lead a normal life.”
