Choem is a 77-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. He has four living children - a daughter and three sons - and thirteen lively grandchildren. Choem and his wife shared that they lost a child at birth and a son who had a heart attack at a young age. He and his wife live with their youngest son, who is employed as a teacher. In his free time, Choem enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio and joining the ceremony at his local pagoda.
One year ago, Choem developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him photophobia, tearing, and blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he cannot go out on his own. It is difficult for Choem to have to spend his days inside, unable to participate in his usual activities.
When Choem learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On March 21st, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly again. CSC is requesting $253 to fund this procedure, and Choem’s family contributed $100 to his care.
Choem shared: “After surgery, I hope my eyesight will be better so I can recognize my family and visit the local pagoda to join in ceremonies.”
