Keanin lives in Cambodia with his wife and two young children. As a family, they enjoy listening to music and playing various sports. Both he and his wife work on their land farming rice. Keanin mentioned he would also like to start growing vegetables, but does not have the space currently. When it is rice harvest season, they keep half of the rice for cooking, and they sell the other half to support the family. When there is not much to be done in the rice field, Keanin does short-term work where he collects wood and branches from the nearby area, puts them through a wood chipper, and sells the wood chips to a local company. Around four months ago, the lid of the wood chipping machine became loose and hit Keanin in the right knee, causing a major laceration. He was rushed to a nearby hospital to stop the bleeding. He was then advised to go four hours to Phnom Penh for surgery to repair a damaged artery. Unfortunately, the artery repair was unsuccessful, and Keanin needed an amputation of his leg. Last week, the doctor from a prosthetics and orthotics organization contacted him to come in to fit his new prosthetic leg. However, when he tried to put the prosthetic on, he felt sharp pain and was unable to wear it. The doctor referred him to Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) for a consultation and to see if our partner medical team could help. Keanin needs a stump revision procedure to modify the nerve causing him pain. This will ease his pain, and make it possible to wear his new leg. Our partner CSC is requesting $391 to fund the surgery. Keanin shared, "I hope I can not be in pain and wear the prosthetic leg and be more comfortable. Then I can go back to working to support my family."

10 year old Dennis is the third child in a family of four children, all of whom study at a local primary school. Dennis' father - who is from Uganda - and his mother - who is from Kenya - separated several years ago. Now Dennis and his siblings live with their mother in Marakwet West, Kenya, where Dennis' mother is a casual laborer, working on local farms. On weekends and holidays, Dennis and his siblings assist their mother in her work, so as to earn additional money for the family. While helping a neighbor cut animal feed into small pieces, Dennis' hand was injured by a chaff cutter. When Dennis was brought to the hospital, it was determined that several of the fingers on his right hand had been damaged. Two of the fingers had to be amputated right away, while the third finger subsequently developed gangrene, and also needed to be amputated. While Dennis has recovered from his injuries, the wound on his hand has never healed completely. The surgeon advised the family that Dennis requires skin grafting, in order to replace the skin that he lost when his hand was injured, and to ensure the total healing of the wound. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is here to help. They are requesting $1,089 to fund Dennis' skin grafting procedure, which is scheduled for May 19th, at AIC Kapsowar Hospital. This procedure will enable Dennis to fully recover, so that he can return to school, and resume the life of a 10 year old boy. Dennis's mother said: "It is so sad that my son has lost his fingers, but I am grateful to God that he is still alive. I am looking forward to seeing him get well so that he may continue with his education and become successful in life. Kindly help him so that he may recover well."

Veasna lives in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, with his single mom and younger brother. His mom sells spices from home to support her sons to attend school. In his free time, Veasna likes to play basketball with his friends. Currently, his best grades are in math, and he enjoys all subjects at school. At the age of two, Veasna had a seizure and was taken to a nearby hospital. Since then, his mom noticed a foot deformity getting progressively worse. He visited a nearby clinic to have splinting, but the condition has not improved, and it has become difficult to walk, play with his friends, and wear shoes. Veasna and his mom traveled one and a half hours to Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Doctors will perform an achilles tendon lengthening surgery. This will allow him to distribute weight across his whole foot, giving him greater balance and ease of walking. After a physiotherapy program, Veasna will be able to walk like any other kid. He told us, "I would be happy if I can walk more normally and be able to walk to school and play basketball without it hurting."
