Speech is a 48-year-old mother. She and her husband are small-scale farmers. They own a three-room mud house for shelter. Their firstborn is 22 years old and studied up to secondary school class four, while their second is 20 years old and in secondary school class three. They jointly pay her school fees through their farming.
Speech developed a small swelling on the right side of her jaw over 25 years ago. It was painless, so she did not seek medical attention. She only felt it when she was washing her face. However, 3 years ago, the swelling increased in size and became visible as abnormal swelling. She lived with it comfortably until last January, when she started feeling pain radiating from the swollen region. She can no longer sleep on the side of the swollen part because it is too painful. She reports episodes of mild headaches, which she thinks could be caused by the swelling.
Speech traveled to our medical partner African Mission Healthcare (AMH) to receive treatment. On August 11th, surgeons will remove the mass from Speech’s jaw. Speech and AMH need help raising $145 to fund this procedure.
Speech says, “I am worried because anything could come out of the swelling in future. I want to continue with farming after my surgery.”
