Vaughn underwent life-changing hernia repair surgery.

Vaughn had a successful surgery and is now on his way to a full recovery! His original surgery date was postponed so that his doctors were confident that he was healthy enough, and his family is so happy that he’s finally had treatment for his hernia.

Vaughn’s mother expressed her gratitude to Watsi and WSFP for covering Vaughn’s treatment. They’re very happy that he won’t be feeling any more pain and discomfort caused by the hernia, and they’re very hopeful that he can now grow up healthy.

Vaughn is a three-year-old boy from the Philippines. He is the youngest sibling of three. He loves playing with his cousins just like any other child at his age. His father is a construction worker earning minimum wage; while his mother is a stay-at-home mom.

Three months ago Vaughn’s parents noticed a swelling around his belly button. They brought him to the hospital for care and Vaughn has been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. This hernia causes severe stomachaches. Fortunately, on November 10th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center.

Our medical partner is requesting $1,130 to fund Vaughn’s surgery at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently.

“After the surgery, we hope Vaughn will be able to enjoy his childhood and not ever hesitate to play,” shared Edgar, Vaughn’s father.

What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

Hernia symptoms and factors that need surgery include long-term hernia pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort that interferes with everyday activities, and pain or discomfort intensifying or worsening over time.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

The patient may experience a decrease in motor function and well-being due to the pain experienced with the case. Hernia can also be life-threatening to the patient if not treated immediately.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

More often than not, in a country where home remedies are considered as a proactive measure instead of being assessed in the hospital, many Filipinos choose to treat their conditions at home. Additionally, with the increase of surgical costs in the country, and the distance between hospitals and patients, treatment is often out of reach for patients.

What does the treatment process look like?

Herniorrhaphy is the procedure that repairs the weakened abdominal wall.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

It takes three to six weeks for a full recovery after hernia surgeries. Usually, it will take one to two weeks before a person can go back to everyday activities and work or school.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

After six weeks of the procedure, the patient may resume normal activities, especially for patients who are doing manual labor.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

The care facility is equipped and accessible to handle this procedure for patients from within and around the National Capital Region.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Patients without a severe hernia may try home remedies as simple as a cold compress, but severe and long-term hernias require surgical treatment to fully heal.
