Carlens underwent heart surgery and can now grow up healthy.

During the procedure, Carlens’s aortic valve was stretched open with a balloon to a more normal size, so that blood can flow through it without restriction. His doctors and family are hopeful that now Carlens will lead a full life ahead!

Carlens’s mother told us: “Our family is all very relieved that we no longer have to worry about our son’s heart condition. Thank you.”

Carlens is a three-year-old boy from Haiti. He lives with his parents and three siblings in a neighborhood in the capital city. He likes playing with blocks and drawing pictures.

Carlens was born with a condition called aortic valve stenosis, in which one of the four valves of his heart is too small to allow blood to flow through normally. This causes his heart to work too hard, leaving him feeling sick and weak.

Fortunately, our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is helping Carlens to receive treatment. On September 9th, doctors will use a catheter with a balloon at the end to stretch the valve open so that his heart can pump blood more normally. Now, his family needs help to raise $1,500 towards the cost of his procedure and care.

Carlens’ mother shared, “we are very hopeful that our son will have more energy and will become stronger after his surgery!”
