Pork is a 92-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. He is married and has one son, two daughters, and ten grandchildren. He lives with his elderly wife and his youngest daughter, who is a rice farmer and financially supports them. At home, he likes listening to Buddhist prayers on the radio. Three years ago, Pork developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him to experience itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. Pork describes it as if there is a film covering his eye. This condition makes it difficult to see any small details clearly, and he is unable to help around the house, which causes him sadness as he considers it part of his responsibility to help as the head of his family. Overall, Pork has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he cannot go out on his own. When Pork learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On November 1st, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $253 to fund this procedure. Pork said: "I hope, after surgery, both eyes can see better. I hope to recognize relatives, help my wife in the house, and eat and drink well."

Sokkea is a 42-year-old construction worker from Cambodia. He lives with his wife and two young daughters in Phnom Penh. Sokkea's wife sells drinks from a cooler at his construction site to supplement their income. In his free time, Sokkea and his family go to the nearby Mekong River to play and go fishing. Five years ago, Sokkea developed an ear infection, which caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. Now, Sokkea experiences hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear discharge, making it difficult for him to hear. Additionally, Sokkea is losing income because he must visit many clinics and pharmacies for medications that aren't working. Fortunately, Sokkea could travel to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On May 3rd, he will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in his left ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), is requesting $926 to fund this procedure, which covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. Sokkea contributed $100 to his care. When asked about his hopes for the future, Sokkea shared that he wants to get better so he can improve his work and family life.

Daniel is a handsome 4-year-old boy. He is the third born in a family of three children. His father does not work because he has been sick, while the mother is a hawker of fruits, and her income is the sole income to sustain their family. Daniel is in pre-school and they hope he can feel better soon. Daniel’s mother has been struggling with him for three years, taking him to different hospitals without much relief. He has been having chronic tonsillitis and adenoiditis with symptoms like pain, fever, difficulty breathing and eating, sometimes coughing and vomiting with swollen tonsils. This has even affected his schooling. The mother decided to bring him to Nazareth Hospital where the Ear Nose Throat Surgeon ordered an Adenotonsillectomy to remove the tonsils and adenoids. Due to the socio-economic status of Daniel's family, they cannot meet the cost of this critical treatment. If not treated, Daniel will continue to have the pains and other symptoms and may develop complications like tonsillar abscess, middle ear infection, or rheumatic fever. “I am the sole breadwinner from my little income. At the same time, I feel bad to see my child suffering. I plead for help so that he can be treated and be well to grow up normally,” shared Daniel's mother.
