Veasna lives in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, with his single mom and younger brother. His mom sells spices from home to support her sons to attend school. In his free time, Veasna likes to play basketball with his friends. Currently, his best grades are in math, and he enjoys all subjects at school. At the age of two, Veasna had a seizure and was taken to a nearby hospital. Since then, his mom noticed a foot deformity getting progressively worse. He visited a nearby clinic to have splinting, but the condition has not improved, and it has become difficult to walk, play with his friends, and wear shoes. Veasna and his mom traveled one and a half hours to Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Doctors will perform an achilles tendon lengthening surgery. This will allow him to distribute weight across his whole foot, giving him greater balance and ease of walking. After a physiotherapy program, Veasna will be able to walk like any other kid. He told us, "I would be happy if I can walk more normally and be able to walk to school and play basketball without it hurting."

Sokha is a 62-year-old woman from Cambodia. She has one daughter and five grandchildren. She lives with her daughter near the Vietnamese border and spends most of her time listening to the radio and helping around the house. Her family earns a small income, with her daughter selling boiled corn on the roadside and her son-in-law working at a nearby construction site. Sokha had to stop working due to her deteriorating vision but hopes to return to selling eggs in the market as soon as possible. A year ago, Sokha developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places on her own. When Sokha learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for four hours seeking treatment. On August 7th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $253 to fund this surgery. Sokha contributed $50 to her care. Sokha said, "I hope, after surgery, I can see clearly again. I could help my daughter sell corn or return to work at the market."

Annet is a small-scale farmer from Uganda. She was in school up to primary school class five. She dropped out due to a lack of financial support from her parents. She later got married and was blessed with four children. Her firstborn is twenty-five years old, the secondborn is twenty-three years old, the thirdborn is fourteen years old and the fourth is nine years old. Her children did not attend school due to financial constraints. She is currently unable to work on her small farm due to her illness. Over five years ago, Annet began to experience troubling symptoms, including a neck swelling with on-and-off mild pain. The swelling has grown bigger over the years, and she currently cannot lift heavy items. Her breathing is compromised, and she is worried that if not treated it may affect her airway and her health. She visited Rushoroza Hospital for medical advice where some tests were done. She was diagnosed with a left nodulated thyroid gland and the doctor recommended surgery, which she cannot afford. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Annet receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on November 24th at our medical partner's care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $333, and she and her family need help raising money.
