Rong is an elderly retired rice farmer who has developed a cataract in his left eye. He is a widower and has two daughters, three sons, and twenty grandchildren. He used to farm rice on the family plot, but as he has grown older, he spends time at home and lives with his oldest daughter who is a farmer. He likes to play with his grandchildren and listen to the monks pray on the radio.
When Rong learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On June 7th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
“I would like to go outside by myself and see all the faces of my grandchildren well,” shared Rong as he talked with us about his future.

Rong underwent cataract surgery in his left eye.
For several years, Rong was unable to independently go outside because his vision had deteriorated. This meant he could not help on the farm or help around the house. He had a successful eye surgery and he and his daughter returned to their province the day after surgery. He was grateful his sight was already starting to improve. At home, he rested for a few days and used medication to decrease the risk of infection. The cataract surgery will improve his life because he will feel more useful to his family and can be more independent. Rong looks forward to visiting his children, grandchildren, and the local pagoda.
Rong’s daughter said, “My father was very unhappy when he could not visit the pagoda because he could not see to go places alone. I am relieved he can have his life back and do the things he likes to do. Thank you to the kindness of strangers who helped our family.”
