Randy underwent shoulder surgery.

Randy’s surgery was successful! He’s so happy now that his giant lipoma was removed. He feels lighter and more comfortable now. He’s more confident to face the people, without covering his back. He’s also eager to apply for jobs to support his family, which was stopped due to his medical condition.

Randy says, “I’m not shy anymore to socialize with other people. Also it won’t be hard for me to be accepted on the job that I’ll be applying for,” Randy shared happily. “Thank you, World Surgical Foundation Philippines, and Watsi for being my answered prayer. May you continue helping less fortunate people like me,” he added.

Randy is a 49-year-old from the Philippines. He has developed a large mass on his left shoulder. Because of this mass, Randy has been unable to secure full time employment. In order to support the needs of his family, Randy works part time in the neighborhood where he lives.

Because of his inability to afford and access care, Randy had to delay treatment for a couple of years, and the mass increased in size. Fortunately, Randy found his way to our medical partner, World Surgical Foundation Philippines, and he is now scheduled for surgery on May 3rd at Our Lady of Peace Hospital. World Surgical Foundation Philippines is requesting $1,196 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care, which will remove the mass and enable Randy to return to full time employment.

“Randy is so eager to be treated so he can work and provide for his family,” his sister said. “We are very grateful to World Surgical Foundation Philippines and Watsi for helping people like us. Thank you for your generous hearts,” she added.

What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

The most obvious symptom of an abscess is a painful, compressible area of skin that may look like a large pimple or even an open sore. The skin around the abscess may look red and feel tender and warm. A patient may also see pus draining from the site.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

Patients often experience pain, which can hinder them from carrying our day-to-day tasks or being active in their community. Patients may also feel self-conscious by the visibility of the abscess, impacting their self esteem.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

The appearance of patients with a number of abscesses in the body may cause people to exclude them from society. Within the country, it may be common that people assume that the patient may have something contagious and they can be isolated socially.

Patients will be able to live their life normally without exclusion from society.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Smaller abscesses (<5 mm) may resolve spontaneously with the application of warm compresses and antibiotic therapy.
