Rachana underwent eye surgery.

Rachana and her grandmother traveled to our medical partner CSC for her procedure. She rested at home for several days and used eyedrops at home to help in healing and reduce the chance of infection. The incision site will heal on its own, and the redness and swelling have started to disappear. This treatment will help her see better and sleep at night. She looks forward to seeing well again and is so glad her eye looks much better!

Rachana’s grandmother said: “I am happy I brought my granddaughter to CSC for her examination and treatment. The staff and doctors were friendly and caring about her. The doctor explained her eyelid disease clearly and told me she needed surgery. Thank you for caring for our children here in Cambodia.”

Meet Rachana, a three-year-old preschooler living in Cambodia. She and her sister love to play with dolls, and Rachana also likes to draw.

Three weeks ago, Rachana developed chalazion in both eyes, causing her irritation and itchiness. A chalazion is an inflamed cyst in a patient’s tear gland, which can make it difficult for a patient to see clearly.

Rachana and her grandmother sought help from our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre. On February 1st, surgeons at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will remove the cysts through a chalazion excision procedure. After she has recovered, Rachana’s symptoms should improve. Rachana and her family need your help to raise $210 to fund this procedure.

Rachana’s grandmother said: “I want the surgery to remove the cysts so I don’t worry anymore.”

What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

Patients feel discomfort and experience swelling on their eyelids. They are sensitive to light. These symptoms are due to the presence of a chalazion, a cyst in the eyelid caused by inflammation of a blocked gland. A chalazion can cause swelling and heaviness on the eyelid, tenderness, sensitivity to light, and increased tearing. A large chalazion can cause astigmatism due to pressure on the cornea.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

Patients experience discomfort, and light sensitivity often keeps them indoors.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

If treated early, a chalazion can be treated with topical antibiotic eye drops. However, our medical partner's patients tend to neglect small conditions. The chalazion cases seen at CSC are developed enough to require surgical treatment.

What does the treatment process look like?

Surgeons perform a chalazion incision and drainage to remove the chalazion.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

The chalazion is removed, and the patient can comfortably resume life without any light sensitivity or pain. Patients also tend to feel improved confidence when the chalazion is removed.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

This is a low-risk treatment.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

This surgery is accessible in Cambodia, but it is too expensive for our medical partner's patients.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

There are no alternatives. If left untreated, infection and damage to the eyelid can occur.
