Math Sa is a 64-year-old fisherman. He has one daughter, four sons, and six grandchildren. He lives with his wife who sells their fish at a local market, and his youngest daughter who is a student. At home, he likes to listen to the news on the radio and visit his mosque.
Two years ago, Math Sa developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him photophobia and blurry vision. Now he is unable to catch fish because it is hard for him to see the nets in bright sun.
When Math Sa learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On May 9th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly again and do more outside in the daytime. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Math Sa says: “I hope after surgery I can see clearly again. I want to be able to catch fish again to support my family.”

Math Sa underwent cataract surgery for his right eye.
Math Sa was worried he could no longer fish and would have to be fully supported by his children. He visited Children’s Surgical Centre and was pleased that he could have surgery with support from donors on Watsi. He spent the night after his surgery in the hospital and was able to return home the next day with eyedrops he must instill eight times a day. Math Sa’s vision is already improving and he looks forward to returning to his favorite fishing spot. This will improve his life because he and his wife can sell the fresh fish at their local market to support themselves.
Math Sa said: “I feel very grateful. And, I am relieved I was able to have this surgery so I can support my family and make sure my daughter stays in school. I can take walks with my wife and visit the temple on my own. Thank you for your help to pay for my surgery.”
