John is a 27-year-old young man from Kasarani in Kenya. He is the second born in a family of four children, and he is studying at Kenya School of Law to become a lawyer. Before his sickness, John enjoyed playing football with his friends. His father is a police officer, and his mother is a homemaker. John's condition started about a year ago when he started having epigastric pain (pain in his upper abdomen), nausea and heartburn. He was treated for H. pylori, a bacterial infection, with no improvement. The condition has affected his studies because it has hindered him from completing his exams. An endoscopy procedure showed that he is suffering from hiatus hernia - a condition where part of the stomach squeezes up into the chest through an opening ("hiatus") in the diaphragm. John is scheduled to have surgery on July 17th with our medical partner African Mission Healthcare (AMH) and needs help with $788 to fund the procedure. If not treated, John will continue having the symptoms that may result in complications like gastrointestinal reflux syndrome, severe heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and the development of stomach ulcers. John shared, “I am still young and wish to complete my studies so that I can plan my future. I kindly request for help so that I get this treatment. I have no happiness or peace of mind until I get this surgery.”

Abel is a one-year-old baby from Kenya. He lives with his uncle, his grandfather, and his mother, who works as a clothing washer for her neighbors to support her family. Abel's grandmother passed away when his mother was young, and his grandfather raised her and her brother, and now helps take care of Abel. When Abel's grandfather was watching television, he saw a doctor discussing undescended testes in boys. He decided to check on Abel and realized that Abel had the same condition. Abel's grandfather brought Abel and his mother to the hospital so that doctors could examine Abel. The doctors confirmed that Abel has cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both of the testicles remains undescended. If left untreated, Abel has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and fertility problems in the future. Surgeons advised a bilateral orchidopexy to correct Abel's condition, but Abel's family cannot afford this treatment and need help. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), can help. Abel is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery at AMH's care center on July 6th. Now, AMH is requesting $459 to cover the total cost of Abel's procedure and care. Abel's grandfather said, “I have taken care of my two children from the time their mother died. Even this my grandson I would like the best for him. I don’t want him to have problems like the doctor was explaining on TV. Kindly assist us so that he can grow up like the other boys”

Yoeun is a 66-year-old widow from a small village in Kampong Thom province. She has six children - four daughters and two sons. Her children have given her four sweet and playful grandchildren, who are the light of her life. Sadly, her husband passed away three years ago from a drowning accident, and she now lives with her youngest daughter, a rice farmer. One year ago, Yoeun developed a cataract in her right eye, causing blurry vision and tearing. Therefore, she cannot go out in the rice paddies and stays home alone. Poor vision in older adults often leads to depression, anxiety, and social isolation. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places on her own. When Yoeun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four hours seeking treatment. On June 6th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye, Yoeun is now on the path to clear vision. However, to complete her journey, she requires assistance in funding the $253 procedure. She said: "I hope that after the surgery, I can see better. I want to go outside by myself to help plant crops and recognize my family and friends."
