Soeun is a 62-year-old married farm worker, living in Cambodia. Together, he and his wife have two sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren. Soeun and his wife both work on a corn plantation in a small, remote province in northwest Cambodia.
One year ago, Soeun developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him to experience light sensitivity, tearing, and blurry vision. As his vision has deteriorated, it has become increasingly difficult for Soeun to work outdoors, as he is unable to see clearly.
When Soeun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for eight and a half hours to seek treatment. On October 18th, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform cataract surgery, and implant an intraocular lens in his left eye. After he has recovered, Soeun should be able to see clearly, and to feel more secure about working outdoors. Now, he needs your help to fund this $253 procedure.
Soeun shared: “I hope after surgery I can see better and go back to work, so I can earn money for my living and support my family.”

Soeun underwent cataract surgery.
Soeun realized that he needed to do something about his failing vision so that he did not become totally dependent on others. He took the advice of neighbors and underwent cataract surgery. He was able to return home the following day with instructions to rest for a few days and instill eye drops over the next week. As his vision slowly improved, he was amazed at how poor his eyesight had been and is excited that he can recognize faces, go outside in the bright sun, and be much more active.
Soeun’s wife said: “my husband is so much happier with better vision. He was depressed that he could not see well enough to work in the corn fields and help with the house. Now he can go outside by himself without worrying. Thank you.”
