Oeun is a 65-year-old farmer with one daughter and one grandchild. Oeun’s daughter lives and works in Thailand, so Oeun lives in Cambodia and cares for her school-age grandchild.
Two years ago, Oeun developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her photophobia and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going outside.
When Oeun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On January 4th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $229 to fund this procedure.
Oeun shared, “After surgery, I hope I can see clearly and cook food for my grandchild.”

Oeun underwent sight-restoring cataract surgery.
We’re happy to report that Oeun’s cataract surgery was a success! Before surgery, Oeun was anxious to get started, and have her vision improved so she could take better care of her grandchild. She will rest for few days, and continue to care for the incision site to ensure there’s no risk of infection. This surgery will now allow her to be more independent, and she will no longer have to be afraid of falling so frequently when she goes outside. She will also be able to use the stove on her own to cook delicious meals for her family again.
Oeun said: “I’m so happy I will see well again. I can take my grandchild to school, and cook for her. I never thought I would see so well again. Thank you to the staff and the donors who help Cambodians have a better life.”
