Oun is a 75-year-old retired rice farmer. She lives in Pursat province, revered as one of the holiest sites of Cambodian Buddhism. Her husband died of lung disease many years ago, so she lives with her son, his wife and her grandchildren, who are all rice farmers. When not helping out in the house, she likes visiting the local pagoda to listen to the monks pray. Four years ago, Oun developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her tearing, blurry vision, and photophobia. Oun has to spend her days inside the house due to light sensitivity from her cataract, and she cannot do what she normally likes to do. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own. When Oun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for six and a half hours seeking treatment. On January 3rd, doctors will perform phacoemulsification and place an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Oun said: "I hope my eye can be fixed, so I can continue to spend time with my family and recognize faces."

Soktha is a 32-year-old man from Cambodia. He is married with two children. His son is seven years old and in first grade, while his daughter is one year old and stays home with his wife. Soktha sells bread at the local market. At home in his free time, he likes to play football, read books, and play with his children. For the past three years, Soktha has been experiencing pain and swelling in his left jaw. He visited a local hospital and underwent biopsies, which showed that he has a tumor and chronic inflammation in the tissue around his jaw. As a result of this condition, Soktha experiences pain, cannot open his mouth, and has difficulty eating and drinking. When Soktha learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On December 5th, doctors will perform a mandibulectomy and fibula free-flap reconstruction. After recovery, Soktha hopes to be pain-free and able to open his mouth again. CSC is requesting $991 to fund this procedure, which covers the cost of surgery, hospitalization, and medications. Soktha's family was able to gather $100 to contribute to his care. Soktha said: "I hope I can eat and drink again and get comfortable, so I can feel good again to support my family."

Khneng is a 67 year old former farmer. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter - a garment worker - in Cambodia. Together, he and his wife have one son, five daughters, and four grandchildren. To supplement their income, Khneng maintains a small vegetable garden. Two years ago, Khneng developed a cataract in his left eye, which causes him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. Because he has difficulty seeing clearly, he is reluctant to go out on his own. When Khneng learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours to seek treatment. On November 3rd, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform small incision cataract surgery, and implant an intraocular lens in his left eye. After he has fully recovered, Khneng will be able to see clearly, and regain his independence. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Khneng said: "I hope after surgery my eye can see better. I hope to go outside, take care of myself, and plant vegetables around my house to sell and support our living."

Narak is a 19-year-old farmer who lives with his parents and has an eight-year-old sister who is in grade two. He has finished grade 10 in school. The family grows rainy day rice and vegetables that they sell at the local market. Narak helps his parents on the farm and is studying Japanese because he wants to work in Japan one day. In his free time, he enjoys singing songs, listening to music, playing football, and swimming. In March 2022, he was in a motor vehicle accident that caused a fracture in his left femur. He was treated at a government hospital with a fracture repair and external fixation frame but did not follow up after two months because of his inability to pay. He feels poorly, and has chronic discharge and redness at the surgical site. It is difficult for him to walk and he is in chronic pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On October 5th, Narak will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $483. This procedure will rid him of his chronic infection and help him walk again. Narak said: "after surgery, I hope my left leg will be fixed, no pain, no infection, and I can go back home soon."

Meet Kosal, a 32-year-old husband and father who lives in Cambodia with his wife and three children. When he is not working, he enjoys playing volleyball, watching television, and spending time with his family. On June 12th, Kosal's left hand was burned at work by an electric shock. He visited a private clinic for wound care and medication and remained there for 15 days. Although he eventually returned home, the wound on his hand remained unhealed and has since become infected. He is currently experiencing pain and has a loss of sensation. Kosal traveled to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), to seek treatment for his infected wound. On September 1st, surgeons at CSC's care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, will perform a debridement and nerve graft procedure on his left wrist. This surgery should enable Kosal to heal completely and regain full motion of his hand. CSC is now seeking $572 to fund his procedure. Kosal says, "I hope my left hand heals and I can return to work again."

Anjelina is a beautiful two-year-old baby from Tanzania. She is the youngest of three children in her family. Both of her parents do small-scale farming of maize, beans, and other vegetables, which they grow to feed their family. To help earn money, her father sometimes works as a casual laborer. Anjelina was born at a local hospital where her parents were informed that their daughter has clubfoot of both feet. Clubfoot is a condition where the foot is twisted out of shape, causing difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Although the doctor notified them that their daughter's condition could be corrected at a referral hospital, the hospital was over an eight-hour bus ride away, and they could not fund the transportation due to financial constraints. Fortunately, Anjelina's family was able to travel to our medical partner's care center, Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on July 15th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $935 to fund Anjelina's clubfoot repair. After treatment, she will be able to walk easily. Anjelina’s mother shares, “We tried to correct her feet using a local doctor, but there was not much improvement, and we couldn't afford to go to the referral hospital.”

Sareth is a 52-year-old rice farmer who needs cataract surgery so he can see clearly again. His wife is a garment worker and they have two sons, two daughters, and one grandchild. In his free time, Sareth likes to watch boxing on TV. Two years ago, Sareth developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him blurry vision and photophobia. Consequently, he has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he cannot go places independently. When Sareth learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On June 7th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $253 to fund this procedure. Sareth says, "I want to be able to see better again and do all the things I need to."

Alvin is a jovial four-year-old in nursery school. Alvin is the firstborn in a family of two children. Alvin's father used to work in an engineering company as a casual laborer, but lost his job during the onset of Covid-19. He now does jobs around their home area to provide for the family. Alvin's mother is a stay-at-home mom. Late last year, his father noticed some swelling in Alvin's abdominal area. Alvin was examined at a nearby hospital and diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. Alvin was booked for surgery but they would have to wait for his treatment. A friend referred them to our medical partner's care center BethanyKids Hospital as an alternative. Upon arrival, Alvin was examined and diagnosed with cryptorchidism. If left untreated, Alvin has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and fertility problems in the future. Alvin's family does not have medical insurance and can not raise the required amount of money to fund Alvin’s hospital bill. Alvin will be receiving assistance from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH) and is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on May 11th. AMH is requesting $646 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. Alvin’s father says, “Despite the financial struggles that we are going through, I know that God will provide the required amount of money to cater for my son’s bill.”

Kea is a 41-year-old food seller. She is married and her husband works as a potato and vegetable farmer to make a living. The couple has three daughters, who are in first, ninth, and 10th grade in school. In her free time, Kea enjoys exercising, playing with her children, watching television, cooking, and shopping. Three weeks ago, Kea fractured her right hand as she tried to catch a fan that was falling from her ceiling. She experiences pain and cannot move her finger. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), can help. On April 25th, Kea will undergo a fracture repair procedure at CSC's care center. The surgery will allow her to use her hand easily again. Now, she needs help raising $483 to fund her procedure and care. Kea shared, "I hope my hand heals quickly and I am able to return to work soon without pain."

Peter is a 75-year-old man from central Kenya who has never been married and has no children. He is the thirdborn in a family of 10 siblings, all of whom are now adults. Peter previously worked on his small farm to support his basic needs, but he had to begin depending on his family members once he grew older and became unable to continue farming. On July 12th, Peter was hit by a sports motorcycle, causing him to sustain an injury to his left leg. An X-ray was taken at a nearby hospital, which showed that Peter fractured his left tibia and fibula. If left untreated, he risks developing a bone infection, since it is an open fracture. His injury can also result in a malunion, meaning the bones may not heal in their proper position, potentially impairing functioning of the bones and limb. Fortunately, his brother brought him to our medical partner's care center. On August 15th, Peter will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help ensure he heals properly, and it will allow him to walk again. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,049 to fund this procedure. Peter says, “My brothers have been feeding me, but this is too much for them. They have no money to pay for my treatment. Please help so that at least I can be able to move around and also become less of a burden.”

Onesmus is a cheerful and friendly 7-year-old student from Kenya. His father is a minibus taxi driver, and his mother sells vegetables to locals. Onesmus is the firstborn of three children in his family. He has a brother who has the same condition as him, and they both require surgery. Onesmus was born with hypospadias, a congenital condition that causes urinary dysfunction. Without treatment, he will continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms and will be at risk of infertility. Onesmus is visiting our facility for the second time. He and his brother both underwent first stage hypospadias repair about a year ago. Now, they must undergo a second and final stage repair for full functioning of the affected area. Onesmus's family has insurance, which is paid for by the government through the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). However, NHIF could not approve surgery for both brothers, so only one surgery will be funded. Due to financial constraints, their parents are unable to fund Onesmus's procedure. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), can help. Onesmus is scheduled to undergo second stage corrective surgery on July 25th at our medical partner's care center. AMHF is requesting $874 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. Onesmus's mother shares, "I am really looking forward to my son's well-being. I believe all will be changed by the end of the procedure.”

Misgana is a 15-month-old girl from Ethiopia. She is a happy and friendly baby. She has one older sister she loves to play with, and she also loves playing with her dolls. Her mom makes injera (a traditional Ethiopian food) for a living. She brings her two daughters along with her to work because she has no one to look after them while she is away. Misgana's dad is a farmer and they live in a rented house. Misgana was born with an anorectal malformation, a congenital abnormality that leads to a complete or partial intestinal blockage. She needs to undergo a series of procedures to eliminate bowel dysfunction. Misgana underwent emergency colostomy surgery at BethanyKids Myungsung Christian Medical Centre (BKMCM) and now needs to have her next stage of treatment to fully heal. Her mom shared how difficult this has been on their family psychologically and that they cannot afford Misgana's medical bill. Fortunately, Misgana is now scheduled to undergo surgery to correct her condition on July 7th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,500 to cover the total cost of Misgana's procedure and care. After her recovery, Misgana will no longer experience bowel dysfunction or be at risk of developing related health complications in the future. Her mom says “I hope my child will heal and grow. I want her to learn about God. And I wish she will get a good education and become a teacher.”
